Abstract:Sense of purpose, spirituality and religion are more and more frequently the subject of research in Psychology. Patients rarely feel heard by their psychiatrist or therapist when it comes to questions about the meaning of life. The human species is concerned with the search and provision of meaning; therefore it is important for the area of mental health care (GGZ) to create a place for the sense of purpose in treatments. Sense of purpose has been defined as follows: “The sense of purpose is a continuous process in which every person, through interaction with their environment, gives meaning to his or her life”. This study focuses on the experiences of the guests of the mental healthcare institute Hezenberg regarding the meaning of life-component in the provided treatment. Qualitative research has been conducted via a semi-structured interview implanted on an item-list, to which ten guests of the Hezenberg, a mental health organization with a religious background, participated. These interviews have been analyzed using both thematic analysis and sensitizing concepts. The results indicate that most of the guests used the Christian identity of the Hezenberg as a criterion to choose the Hezenberg. Attention to sense of purpose within the treatment seems to be important to both the Christian guests and to guests with alternative senses of purpose. Experiences are predominantly positive, nevertheless improvements are possible. We thus recommend the Hezenberg to provide ample possibility for guests to talk about questions concerning faith and the meaning in life with a theologian. Furthermore, the use of other stories in Bibliodrama and a voluntarily Bible study are preferred by the guests, and we deem it advisable to carry out this wish.
