Abstract:In the light of the RAAK-project ‘Designing for Caregivers’ research was done about the perception of safety of the caregiver. The results of this research have led to the case-study that is concerned in this Bachelor Thesis. The case-study of this Bachelor Thesis is about the recognizability of the home caregiver. The main question that was formulated in the beginning of this assignment is: ‘how can increasing the recognizability of the caregiver contribute to the perception of safety of the caregiver?’. In order to be able to answer the main question, chapter 1 begins by laying out the characteristics of the home caregiver. The research that was performed earlier in the RAAK-project is considered helpful for this analysis. The main part of the target group is female with an average age of 41. The home caregiver encounters various types of clients, who can impede her activities in different ways. Generally, a home caregiver is satisfied with her job, especially when she has enough time to deliver good and attentive health care. The main purpose of this thesis is to increase the perception of safety of the caregiver, therefore it is important to understand the meaning of safety and safety perception. Safety is the degree of a person his protection and his feeling of protection against personal sorrow. Safety can be divided into several terms. This thesis mainly covers the subjective perception of social safety, thus the sense of security. The findings of the observations and interviews done for this thesis, as well as the results of previous studies of the RAAK-project, show that home caregivers generally feel safe during their work. Although the results of the previous research show unsafe outdoor situations, results of the interviews in this thesis show that the majority of difficult situations happen indoors with the client. Few home caregivers think recognizability increases their safety perception. The results of the interviews that were done for this thesis do not directly show that recognizability increases the safety perception of the home caregiver. By presenting several home caregivers with two different product ideas, it becomes clear that a fast alarm method can increase the perception of safety. This conclusion has led to a new main question, namely: ‘how can an alarm system be developed in a manner that contributes to the perception of safety of the caregiver?’ By analyzing the requirements of the caregiver with respect to an alarm system, several focal points emerge. The focal points of the alarm system are: being able to alarm quickly, portability, increasing the perception of safety, fit to the current working situation and methods, subtlety/stealth, and size. With these focal points, three concepts are generated: the alarm cord, the waist band and the incognito watch. The final concept is a combination of the incognito watch and the alarm cord: the incognito pocket watch. The product looks like a stopwatch or pocket watch and can be worn around the neck. By hitting a button, the alarm is activated. The outcome of this Bachelor Thesis is a concept for an alarm product which influences and increases the perception of safety of the caregiver. It is important to determine if the product fits the current methods of the target group. In order to do so, it would be a logical follow-up to evaluate the product with the target group.
