Abstract:Partners of cancer patients are key players in the process of the illness. Partners have strong influence on the treatment(s) chosen and provide frequent care and emotional support. The experience of having cancer is greatly defined by the contributions of the partner. Especially while governments are trying to decrease costs for public health care, partners play a bigger and bigger role in every day care. The goal of this research is to find out more about the health status of partners of cancer patients in the Netherlands and to define risk factors and mitigating factors. The questionnaire used is composed of several different questionnaires measuring the following aspects: general health, mental health, depression, anxiety, resilience, caregiver strain, posttraumatic growth and active engagement. The results of this research show that partners of cancer patients show depression (21,3%), anxiety (35,1%) and caregiver strain (32,1%) frequently. Demographic factors appear not to be identified as risk factors, although younger people do experience more caregiver strain and also show more posttraumatic growth. Partners of patients with lung cancer show higher stress levels, as do partners of patients who are given chemotherapy and with negative prognosis. Resilient partners appear to deal with their situations better and show less depression, anxiety and caregiver strain. In general partners who experience higher stress levels do state they would be helped by some form of intervention, especially after they are shown examples of an online intervention. The intervention should focus mainly on providing information. Partners show hardly any interest in participating in support groups.
