Abstract: | Following fromthe requirement that a typical customer of a direct fired boiler systemis interested in producing steam at operating conditions as fast as possible after startup, research is conducted and a model has been developed to provide an early stage indication towards quantifying this requirement. An important factor of this model is to be able to provide fast and simple means of producing realistic startup curves. The model itself has been developed by evaluating measurement data from a warm startup of a direct fired boiler plant nearby Dubai. Following fromthese observations together with applying laws of conservation of mass and energy a suitable calculation scheme has been implemented. Besides being able to simulate boiler startup, also the related ability to simulate systemcooldown has been implemented. In order tomake themodelmore easy toworkwith it is supplied together with a graphical user interface. The user interface consists of a data input section, input checking with feedback, and visualization of the calculated startup curves. The performed validation of the model has been done using the available startup measurement data. The results following from the model at similar starting conditions as those of the field data are in good agreement, although this can’t be verified for all properties due to a lack of available measurement data. However further validation of the model is recommended to ensure that, also for the e.g. cold startup scenario, the model is in satisfactory agreement with all common situations of performed measurements. |
