Abstract: | The subject of this study is if citizens report crime or not; which factors influence their behavior? The respondents completed the questionnaire. This study focused on three factors which probably influence the fact that citizens report crime or not. These three factors are attitude of citizens towards the police, their opinion about the contact with the police in the past and their moral values. To measure the fact if citizens report crime or not a scenario is offered in the questionnaire. The subject of the scenario was theft or drugs. There is also examined if framing of a crime in terms of Community Safety versus Crime Prevention has a moderating effect on the relationship between moral values of people and reporting crime or not. The results will probably show that citizens with a positive attitude towards the police will be more inclined to report crime. An other result could be that, citizens with a positive contact towards the police in the past, will be more motivated to report crime. Besides the results probably will show that there is a moderating effect for the terms Community Safety versus Crime Prevention for the relationship between moral values of citizens and reporting crime or not. Finally the results will probably demonstrate that citizens who have a positive attitude towards the police will be more inclined to report crime. The results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between attitude towards the police and the fact that citizens report crime or not. Citizens who score high on attitude will not report crime sooner than to report it. The opinion of citizens about the contact with the police in the past and their attitude towards the police shows no significant relationship. Also, there is no significant relationship between citizens who score low or high on moral values and reporting crime or not in connexion with Community Safety or Crime Prevention. There is no moderated effect for this relationship. However, there is a relationship between citizens who score low or high on the moral value authority/respect and their attitude towards the police. The results show that citizens who score high on the moral value authority/respect should have a more positive attitude towards the police. |
