Abstract:The objective of this report was the construction of a multidimensional questionnaire with which caregivers are able to estimate the Quality of Life (QoL) of people with the Korsakov syndrome (KS). The new instrument (QUALIKO) orientates itself in composition and content towards the QUALIDEM, a questionnaire which measures the QoL of people with dementia. Furthermore the QUALIKO is based on literature studies on KS and QoL, a survey of KS-clients on the relevance of subscales for the QoL, and an expert panel which was appointed to declare the items as fitting on the basis of the survey. The pilot study of the QUALIKO-prototype took place in Krönnenzommer a nursing home in Hellendoorn, Netherlands. Seventy-seven clients with KS participated in this study. Each client’s QoL was independently estimated by two caregivers. The analysis section is concerned with the QUALIKO’s reliability. The appertaining report from Rosebrock (2013) discusses the QUALIKO’s validity. In the reliability analysis Cronbach’s alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were computed by subscale. The client’s QoL-scores were averaged and also presented by subscale. The results revealed a reliable internal consistency of the subscales and a steady agreement among the caregiver’s QoL-estimations. Further research may concentrate on the test-retest reliability of the instrument. Taken together the QUALIKO can be considered to be a reliable instrument to measure the QoL of KS-clients.
