Abstract:Within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), six processes are used to enlarge psychological flexibility. These can be divided into three pairs, which are called response styles. For two of the response styles are process-specific questionnaires available, namely for the open and for the centered response style. With the help of these questionnaires, it is possible to examine which treatment works best for whom. The Engaged Living Scale (ELS) was recently developed to measure the third response style, which is called the engaged response style, within the framework of ACT. The ELS consists of 16 items designed to measure two factors: Valued Living and Life Fulfillment. Additionally, a common underlying factor is measured by the total score. So far was no suitable questionnaire available to measure the process of engaged living. The aim of this study was to assess psychometric qualities of the ELS as factor structure, internal consistency and test-retest reliability in a young population and to show whether results from an earlier study can be replicated in this population. In this study, the ELS was filled in by 76 students. About a week later 61 students filled it in again. The analyses of these data revealed that the ELS shows generally good internal consistency although the factor structure not clearly emerged. The factor Valued Living could not clearly be replicated in this study. Regarding the test-retest reliability, this was examined for the first time in this study, good to excellent results were found.
