Abstract:orsakoff´s syndrome is brain damage characterized by severe memory loss en central executive disorders. It´s caused by a serious lack of thiamine (vitamin B) which is found nowadays only by heavy alcohol abuse. Since people with Korsakoff´s syndrome cannot be healed, the purpose of treatment is to improve their quality of life. For people with Korsakoff´s syndrome there is no instrument to measure quality of life. The objective of the current paper was to develop such an instrument and to give first indications of its validity. Based on a recently developed instrument to measure quality of life of people with dementia, the QUALIDEM, a structured observation scale for people with Korsakoff´s syndrome was developed, the QUALIKO. The QUALIKO is easy to use and can be completed by the caretaker. To explore the validity of the instrument a pilot study was conducted with a sample of 77 subjects with Korsakoff´s syndrome. Convergent validity could be approached by letting the instrument correlate with global judgments of quality of life which were obtained by two caretakers and one team-manager for every subject. Moderate to strong correlations of the QUALIKO were found with the global judgments of quality of life, which indicates a sufficient convergent validity. With principal components analysis the ten subscales of the QUALIKO were examined for unidimensionality. For every subscale just one factor could be extracted. Therefore it can be concluded that the subscales are sufficient unidimensional. The results for the QUALIKO are auspicious. The QUALIKO seems to be an appropriate instrument to measure quality of life of people with Korsakoff´s syndrome. Futures study may focus on profound validation and standardization of the instrument.
