Abstract: | Electronic devices (mobile phone and mp3-player) are used every day to make calls, send messages and listen to music. While cycling, this can lead to dangerous situations for the user of the device and other road users. This study tried to gain more insight into the influence of a person’s social environment and the variables of the Extended Parallel Process Model on behavioral intention. This has been tested with a 2 (Efficacy: high vs. low) x 2 (subjective norm: high vs. low) design in which respondents (15-35 year old) all saw/read the same fear appeal message. The results of this study show no effect of efficacy on behavioral intention, which can be explained by the low vulnerability respondents felt. A strong(er) fear appeal is therefore recommended in future research. Furthermore, there appeared to be a significant effect of efficacy on the Danger/Fear control score, which emphasizes the functioning of the EPPM. There was no effect of subjective norm on both behavioral intention and Danger/Fear controls score. Recommendations about further research and practical implications are also specified. |
