Abstract: | Chile has a significant potential for solar energy; the solar irradiation in the northern desert is amongst the highest in the world and the surface of the country compared to the number of inhabitants is huge. Furthermore, electricity prices are relatively high and the investment climate could be considered as good with a low political risk. At the moment however, the solar energy market could be described as underdeveloped and no major subsidizing systems exist. First signs of the planning of major scale exploitation of solar technologies are present however. For this reason it was investigated if implementing photovoltaic solar systems in the Chilean electricity market could be profitable. Methodology Since the northern part of Chile has the highest irradiation and the Metropolitan area the largest number of inhabitants, the report focused on these two geographic areas for the implementation of the photovoltaic solar systems. By comparing the costs of these systems to the costs of delivering energy in the conventional way, it was calculated whether solar energy had reached grid parity. Different types of solar systems were considered in the analyses. Large scale solar plants were analysed in case of connection to the distribution or transmission grid. Home solar systems were taken into account as well; stand alone storage and grid connected systems were considered. Concluding According to the investment model that was developed, investments in photovoltaic solar projects in Chile should be considered as extremely risky concerning the height of the IRR values and the estimations that were done. Nevertheless, first signs of photovoltaic solar systems starting to be competitive within the market were present. Regarding the expectations for price development of photovoltaic modules and an increase in electricity price for the future, it should be stated that Chile has potential to develop an important photovoltaic solar market with world’s highest amount of irradiation and its good investment climate. |
