Abstract:This study examines the extent to which a perception of imbalance in dependence affects the relationship between conflict escalation and stress in a divorce, or separation. There are indications that there is a relationship between stress and conflict escalation, but it is still unclear what factors influence this relationship. A better understanding of these factors can help improve guidance and help during a divorce to help couples separate in a more pleasant way. I expect that, as the imbalance in dependence becomes more negative for the individual, the relationship between conflict escalation and experienced stress becomes stronger. The study was performed using a digital, individual questionnaire that was administered to individuals (N = 114) who were in the midst of a separation. The data are analyzed with two three-way regression analyzes, with the distinction between two different constructs for the measurement of conflict escalation, (1) conflict course and (2) escalation phase. The relationship between conflict escalation and stress was confirmed with the collected data as expected, but there are no indications that a moderating influence of an imbalance in dependence actually exists.
