Abstract: | Objectives: Depression is a common problem in the group of frail elderly in the Netherlands. Life-review therapy has proven to be an effective way in the prevention of depressive symptoms in this group. The intervention dierbare herinneringen is linking life-review to theories about the autobiographical memory. In this intervention participants have to retrieve specific, positive memories. This study focuses on: What are the factors that determine how frail older people with mild to moderate depression symptoms, experience life-review therapy ? This research is important to let future life-review interventions be more effective. Method: This was an exploratory study using a qualitative methodology. Semi-structured interviews were constructed to explore the way that participants experienced the intervention. Transcripts of the interviews were fragmentised and analysed using inductive(bottom-up) analysis. Results: Six factors were found that determine the experience of life-review therapy. Those factors can be divided in two groups. The personal factors and the therapy-related factors. The personal factors: attendance, attitude and stressors can not be affected by the intervention. The therapy-related factors: guidance, experiences with the intervention and continuation of memories, are the fundaments of the intervention en can be effected. Conclusion: Based on the therapy-related factors future life-review interventions can be improved, based on the personal factors any preconditions can be found in advance. |
