Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study is to characterize on the basis of the psychological functions, which in earlier studies (Wahle 2012, Kolberg, Nolden & Schwaiger, 2013) narrative futuring are explored. The characteristics of narrative futuring are examined by clustering of latent psychological functions that recognize the letters from the future. It also looks at the relationship between the clusters and the mental health and the relationship between the clusters and the nationality. From the literature, one can well believe that a relationship exists between cultural factors and narrative futuring as well that narrative futuring exhibits related to mental health. Method: 492 letters from the future were collected using an online tool (www.levensverhalenlab.nl). These are letters that people from a fictional time and place wrote to himself of others, when the future was described. In a story form to measure the mental health of the participants, the Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF) was used. In addition, the participants answered demographic questions. The analysis was done in six steps: First, using a qualitative analysis were psychological functions assigned to the letters. Secondly, the frequency of its physiological functions in a letter has been calculated. Thirdly, a cluster analysis was performed using SPSS. Fourth, in a sample of five letters per cluster was drawn and the quality looked at the contents. Fifth was a variance analysis looked at the relationship between the clusters and the score on the MHC-SF. Finally, the relationship between the clusters and nationality was investigated. Results: There were found six clusters of psychological functions to exist, these are: 1. „Reflective look back”, 2. „Reflective depict “, 3. „Imagining a happy life”, 4. „Give advice reflective”, 5. „Imaginative without reflection” and 6. „Imaginative look back”. It showed that there is a correlation between the clusters and the score on the MHC- SF; one can therefore daresay that the six clusters reveal a connection with mental health. Narrative futuring show no connection with the nationality. Conclusion and Discussion: One can conclude that the identified six clusters characterize the narrative futuring. There is a connection between the narrative futuring and mental health. It seems likely that narrative futuring can be used in mental health.
