Abstract: | This study answers the question, how the policy decision, expressed in the EU Commission’s proposal for the energy and climate goals 2030, can be explained. For this purpose, the applied research refers to two EU integration theories/approaches: liberal intergovernmentalism and social constructivism. A case study that focuses on the Commission’s proposal is carried out. In the context of the case study, a qualitative content analysis according to Mayring will be conducted, using material taken from newspaper articles as well as EU Commission and stakeholder publications. Besides explaining the policy decision, the thesis intends to add new findings and perspectives to the EU integration theory debate by analyzing compliance of a policy change in the field of EU environmental policy with explanations derived from the theoretical approaches. |
