Abstract: | Goal: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a Data Based Decision Making intervention (called Focus II) on the mathematics achievement of elementary school students . Background: Focussing on outcomes in education is a part of data based decision making. It is developed to increase the achievements of students on several subjects in elementary education. During the course of Focus II, elementary school teachers are taught to put the data they gather to a good use. By focussing on the outcomes of their education, teachers are actively involved in improving student performances. The process starts with analyzing students performances, proceeds with diagnosing their current performances, developing a plan and ends with the execution and evaluation of the plan. The Focus II project is an initiative by the University of Twente. Method: By following the students for four years, their performances can be compared with the performances of other students at the same level. We use the difference between the actual scores and the scores of the control group. The analysis of the scores includes a comparison of the differences between gender, socioeconomic status and the schools. A MANOVA provides useful information about interactions between different variables and identifying effects of the intervention. Results: There is no evidence found for the hypothesis that the scores would show an increase during the intervention. The data support however the theory that students with a lower socioeconomic status benefit more from the intervention. The analysis showed that the effect of the intervention varied over schools. |
