Abstract:Introduction: Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (T2DM) have to make some adjustments in their lives to cope with their disease. Those changes in lifestyle of patients can be supported by Personal Health Records (PHRs). PHRs allow patients with a disease to access and manage their own health information and to share them with their physicians. One example of a PHR is the online care platform e-Vita for patients with T2DM. The aim of this study is to gain more insight in the characteristics of the users of e-Vita. Method: The relationship between user characteristics (satisfaction, trust in PHR, ability for self-management, personality traits and involvement in PHR) and the frequency of logging in is studied, in order to evaluate the value of e-Vita for patients with T2DM. 27 users of e-Vita have participated in the study. The method consists of a composed questionnaire and a log-data analysis. The questionnaire measures the user characteristics mentioned above. With the aid of a log-data analysis it is possible to determine the frequency of logging in of the users of e-Vita. The Spearman correlation coefficient is used to assess the correlation between the user characteristics and the frequency of logging in. Results: The analysis shows that the higher users score on the personality trait extraversion, the less often they are logging in on e-Vita (negative relationship). Furthermore one can observe that users, which are more involved with the e-Vita platform, are logging in more frequently (positive relationship). All relationships between other user characteristics and the frequency of logging in are not significant. Discussion: Reasons for the finding that extravert users log in less often, could be that they are scared of a social stigma or that they do not need the support of e-Vita, because they have a great network of friends which supports them in managing their health. In order to achieve a higher usage of e-Vita by T2DM-patients, it could be helpful to implement a communication portal in e-Vita. An explanation for the relationship between the involvement of users with e-Vita and the frequency of logging in might be that e-Vita fits to the needs and desires of T2DM-patients. A shortcoming of this study is that more than 50 percent of the users logged in only once. Conclusion: In conclusion it is shown that extravert T2DM-patients log in less often on e-Vita. The involvement of users with e-Vita correlates with the frequency of logging in. To get a deeper understanding of the relationship between user characteristics and the frequency of logging in, more studies are necessary.
