Abstract:Aim. Social well-being is one of three components of mental health. It is therefore important to have a high degree of social well-being that, if necessary, can be improved. To improve social well-being it is necessary to measure the effects of interventions on the domain of social well-being. For this purpose a measurement with a good psychometric quality is needed. This research describes the construction and validation of a new developed questionnaire and gives an answer to the question how the construct- and convergent validity of this questionnaire is. Method. A convenience sample of 183 respondents from the University of Twente and the research center Movisie took part in the questionnaire that measured social wellbeing and social participation. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is conducted to measure the construct validity. The convergent validity is measured through the relationship of social participation and the MHC-SF with the new developed questionnaire. Results. The EFA showed that the new developed questionnaire consists of seven factors. These were with regard to contents conformity labelled as social contacts, neighbourhood and neighbourhood cohesion, material deprivation, most important activity, social isolation, social institutions and social participation. The factors had a high internal reliability, except social institutions and social participation. The factors correlated weak to moderate but significant with the MHC-SF and showed that the convergent validity good was. The factors neighbourhood and neighbourhood cohesion, material deprivation and social participation correlated weakly till moderate but significant with social participation. Discussion. The research shows that the new questionnaire consists of seven factors. The construct validity of the new questionnaire is good and the convergent validity is satisfying. On some points the questionnaire has to be improved and further research has to be done before the questionnaire can be used. Further research about the negative correlation of the factor material deprivation with social well-being is interesting.
