Abstract:Aim of this study was to research the validity of the Inquiry Skills Test (IST) as a test instrument for inquiry learning skills. The IST and Dutch Science Motivation Questionnaire (DSMQ) were given to a sample of 35 students of the University of Twente. The participants also completed an inquiry learning task (FILE), where their inquiry skills were measured by using a think out loud protocol. The IST and DSMQ were judged on their reliability. Correlation analyses were performed on the variables of the think out loud protocol and subscales of the IST, as well as on the test scores of the IST, DSMQ and FILE task. Regression analyses were performed using both the IST and DSMQ as well as just the IST as predictor(s) of the performance of test subjects on the FILE task. The IST was found to have a high reliability. Furthermore the IST was found to have significant predictive value regarding performance on a task requiring inquiry skills. A statistically significant correlation was found between the IST and the DSMQ. Furthermore evidence was found supporting the validity of the subscales of the IST. All of this adds up to a positive judgment of the IST as a valid test instrument with regards to measuring inquiry skills.
