Abstract:This thesis addresses capacity management at the radiology department of the hospital Isala. The radiology department is a fundamental shared resource within the service delivery process and requires alignment between the requesting departments. In the current situation, the number of requests highly fluctuates while capacity is static over time. As a consequence, the department faces over- and underutilisation problems. There is no insight in the factors that affect the variability in demand which disables to effectively forecast and schedule the required capacity at the right time. Therefore, this research identifies the predicting factors for the variability and analyses several interventions using simulation to increase the match between demand and supply. By optimising the block schedule based on the forecasted demand and changing patient scheduling decisions, the radiology department is able to reduce the variability in demand. Furthermore, when the variability has decreased, it is possible to reduce the staffing level. Implementing the proposed interventions can improve the performance of the radiology department as well as the performance of the referring departments.
