Abstract:The paper at hand discusses the possibilities of effective policing in the EU, with special focus on the Dutch-Bulgarian Joint Investigation Team (JIT). First it will identify why this type of international cooperation is needed and outlines the difficulties we face with policing against cross-border crimes in the EU. An example of a transnational crime is the trafficking of human beings (THB) which is often a huge problem for the country of destination (the Netherlands) and the country of origin (Bulgaria). In the second part of the thesis I will outline the most important elements of international cooperation of a Joint Investigation Team. This will be followed up by a analysis on the legal framework of a JIT. In the last part of the thesis the Dutch-Bulgarian JIT will be studied, with an introducing part about the main problems these two countries face. In the last part of the thesis I will give an conclusion in which I will determine how the usage of a Joint Team can contribute to international cooperation in the combating of transnational crime between the Netherlands and Bulgaria.
