Abstract:The business unit of Nedap Identification Systems is specialized in the use and development of RFID products which are used for the identification of vehicles and people. The TRANSIT Standard, a long distance – RFID reader, is the high end product of this business unit and is appreciated among customers for its stable performance and robust appearance. Over the years, the appearance of the reader has fallen behind in comparison with the other readers of this business unit and its competitors. As the reader undergoes technical improvements, this has been a reason for Nedap Identification Systems to commission for a new design of this reader. In order to develop a reader which reflects both the style of the business unit as the desired robust and innovative appearance, the meaning of this style and these values have been analyzed. With help of sketch designs and collages, a general impression of the opinion of the business unit has been extracted and translated into criteria for the new design of the reader. By investigating the internal and external points of improvement, guidelines for the design of the reader have been drawn up. By comparing possible solutions of these points, well considered choices have been made which caused renewed specifications and product parts. After the technical specifications of the reader have been recorded, concepts have been developed with help of the design criteria. Eventually, a choice between three concepts, based on the degree in which they reflected the desired style, has been made. To determine whether the electrical components connect with the new design of the reader, a 3D CAD model has been developed. Based on this model, the degree in which the new design reaches the desired goals, has been evaluated. Eventually, the created model will be used for the development of the new reader which will replace the current version.
