Abstract:Game-based learning (GBL) is a way of learning that combines educational content with fun. Many studies have shown that GBL on its own is not sufficient for effective learning performance, so there is a need for a support. During GBL sometimes students are overloaded with information that they continuously need to process. Students often show inefficient and ineffective behavior because self-exploratory learning is a difficult process. As a result, students are focused on learning to play the game and not on the educational content. A tool such as an advance organizer can assist the students in the cognitive processing of the task. The aim of this study was to see if an advance organizer has an effect on learning outcomes in game-based learning. For this, men and women who participated were randomly distributed into three conditions. Condition 1 received the advance organizer beforehand, condition 2 received the advance organizer in between two sessions and control group 3 received no advance organizer. Participants played the computer game 'EnerCities' during two sessions of 20 minutes and received a knowledge test at the end. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences between the three conditions in game scores and test scores. Recommendations for further research are: to complete or to adjust the advance organizer and to measure the long term impact of the advance organizer.
