Abstract:There is a demand in the Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) community for high bandwidth services on mobile devices, including group communications. The two technologies that are currently available and can meet the bandwidth requirements of the PPDR community are LTE and IEEE 802.11. Both technologies are mostly used to transmit IP traffic in which multicasting is the efficient way to transmit data to more than one receiver. It is important PPDR users can switch seamlessly between wireless networks. In this thesis an architecture for a future PPDR networks that is fully IP based and uses Proxy Fast Mobile IPv6 (PFMIPv6) to provide seamless mobility to its users is presented. It also describes the problematic nature of multicast handovers in PFMIPv6 networks and how to overcome them. An implementation for such a multicast capable PFMIPv6 system is described and this implementation is evaluated. It is shown the approach can reduce packet loss for multicast packets during a handover to almost 0.
