Abstract:This Bachelor Assignment is carried out at Artica. Artica is a marketing and communications company that develops creative ideas for various national and international clients. The main activities are communication, internet and exhibition stands. And their expertise is: positioning of brands, advertising campaigns, exhibition stands, websites and logo design. The basic idea for an object that creates shade on schoolyard was created at Artica. The problem is more and more trees are disappearing from playgrounds. This problem came up during an interview with the school board of a primary school in Ootmarsum. Trees are a maintenance burden for the school and a safety risk for the children. However, the school indicated that there is need for a shade. Therefore, the assignment is to create a useable ‘shade object’ for primary schools. The purpose of this project is to create a design that includes choice of materials, production processes and global costs. An analysis was done to determine the design principles. In this analysis the function, the environment, the potential users and the stakeholders of the product were investigated. This study shows that the main requirements for schools are: price, maintenance and safety in addition to the amount of shade. Several ideas have been developed from which the three concepts are chosen: the shadow flower that turns to the sun with solar energy, the solar game: a motion game on solar power and the playhouse: a covered seating. The shadow flower is chosen because this concept is the most distinctive. Three versions of the shadow flower are described in more detail: the motorized, the manual and the static flower. The moving versions will rotate with the path of the sun. The static flower is chosen because the analysis of shadows shows that turning barely gives more shade and the moving flowers (motorized and manual) will be more expensive to make and maintain. An affordable and effective design for a shade on primary schools is created. The shadow flower creates a shade about 12 m2 between 12 and 15 o’clock in summer. Therefore, a group of children can play in the shade at the hottest part of the day. The shadow flower will be about € 7500 which is comparable to the price of a swing including a safety ground. Unlike trees, the shadow flower requires hardly any maintenance and it is safe. The static shadow flower is also suitable for squares in cities and villages. A group of shadow flowers can be applied. When the static version is successful, a static version with lightning on solar power is advised to develop. Later on, it may be considered to develop a moving version. The costs for developing and testing the moving version can be covered with the profits from the static version.
