Abstract:When suppliers are involved in new product development (NPD) projects communication can be of crucial importance for the project success. Also the standardization of processes can lead to an increase in efficiency and, therefore, shorten the overall project time. Shorter cycle times of NPD projects are becoming increasingly important, due to shrinking life-cycles of products. Consequently, a qualitative research was conducted. Six project managers have been interviewed regarding the influence of standardized communication on the cycle times of one specific project. The results show that there is a pattern between the companies’ level of standardization and their own opinion concerning the importance of standardization. When the communication process was described as standardized an influence on the time reduction was reported. Especially, the standardization of ‘who is talking to whom’ within the NPD team was indicated as important factor, which increases the efficiency of the communication process and can have a positive influence on the reduction of cycle times.
