Abstract:This essay is the final bachelor-assignment for the bachelorstudy Industrial Design at the University of Twente, executed by Glenn Reijnders. For this assignment an Autonomous Aerial Observation Kite was designed. The assignment commissioned by QConcepts Design and Engineering in Doetinchem. An Autonomous kite is a aircraft which is able to stay in the air as a result of aerodynamic forces harvested from wind. The concept has rotors to support with take-off and landing or with insufficient wind. The autonomous part of the concept makes that the kite steers itself during take-off, flight and landing. To achieve unlimited flight times the kite will by powered through a cable from the ground. A thorough Market analysis was done to find the opportunities and limitations for the concepts. Competing methods for aerial observation were reviewed. The comparison showed that the concept could outshine competitors on the several areas like flighttime, whetherresistance and the legislation. The concept could reach a large market potential if it could be use in a wide range of scenario’s en circumstances. To create a underpinned design, the legislations, environmental factors and possible uses/users were analyzed. During the designing the way the design would fulfill its main purpose became clearer. The main purpose would be to serve a platform which could lift a specific payload in the air for a relative long time within a wide range of circumstances. The designing brought about a challenge concerning the weight distribution. Calculations were done to find a realistic distribution for the weight of the body, the cable, mechatronics and the payload. To divine the concept a Solidworks model was created. The model is build up from variables/parameters, which ensures future changes can be implemented. By varying the parameter a wide range of shapes can be created from the model. The results of the assignment can be used as a firm base for the future development of a prototype for the “QCDE Glider”
