Abstract: | The term Big Data is used to describe not only new properties of today’s data but also data-related technological innovations, analytical advances, as well as the impact it has on society and business. For companies, this can offer opportunities to completely change the way they are doing business. Innovating their business model(s) is a powerful way for incumbent firms to successfully adapt to such exogenous influences and exploit the, otherwise latent, economic value of technological innovations. The presented thesis is the first of a two-part joint research project that studies the interplay of technological innovation and business model innovation in the context of Big Data. More concretely, this research focuses on SAP HANA, a Big Data related technological innovation, and its impact on a firm’s business model. By means of a literature analysis, the underlying thesis aims at structuring and subsequently integrating selected concepts and findings for the three topics of interest: the business model concept, business model innovation and Big Data. As a result, a conceptual framework and four working hypotheses are developed that provide the theoretical basis for the subsequent case study analysis, which will be presented as the second part of this joint research project. |
