Abstract:The Dutch Federation of Rubber and Plastics Industry (NRK) needs a new lesson setup for promotional talks for second year students of the lower secondary professional education. The old lesson setup is outdated and no longer fits the current way of teaching, in which the pupil plays a more central role. The task of developing a new lesson setup has been outsourced to Stichting C3. Stichting C3 forms a link between the chemical industry, education and the youth. Stichting C3 has made a design for a new lesson setup. In the new setup, pupils are encouraged to work interactively with the theory through solving a puzzle. The design of this puzzle is the subject of this report. First the problem is analyzed. In the analysis, we look who the users are, what the context of use is, the substance and how the theory can best be formatted. The characteristics of the target group and their abilities are described using desk research and observations. The same is done for the guest lecturer. Scenarios are made and the theory is examined. To acquire more knowledge on learning and playing, the learning model of Kolb, constructivism and the reversal theory of Apter are used. Also, it was investigated which design features you should use. This analysis forms the theoretical framework for the design of the puzzle. Several designs were made. Together with Stichting C3 some designs were chosen to develop further into concepts. During this development a translation towards a physical product design was made. Of this new design some mechanisms were tested in a functional prototype. These tests form the basis of recommendation for further development.
