Abstract: | The aim of this study was to examine the relations between the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence at work according to the Self-Determination Theory and the three burnout-dimensions emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment among geriatric nurses in retirement homes. Studies have shown that geriatric nurses are at special risk for burnout because of the characteristics of their work and their work environment. These are characterized by a high workload and stress, but also by problems regarding the social work environment, the competence of the nurses and the work organization that often limits the autonomy of the employees. These characteristics correspond with the three basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence and are often associated with burnout. The relation between the basic psychological needs and the dimensions of burnout are examined through an online survey that was one time completed by 123 geriatric nurses in different retirement homes in the Netherlands. The survey measured among others the extent of satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs at work and burnout. Associations were examinded using multiple regressionanalyses. Negative relations were found between the burnout-dimension emotional exhaustion and the basic need of autonomy, between the burnout-dimension depersonalization and the basic needs of autonomy and relatedness, and between the burnout-dimension reduced personal accomplishment and the basic needs of relatedness and competence. |
