Abstract:Background: This thesis research shows through a systematic review which positive psychology mobile applications (apps) which focus on enhancing positive emotions are available and how the quality of these apps are by evaluating them on (1) theoretical background, (2) usability and (3) persuasive technology. Methods: The Apple App Store has been systematically searched for positive psychology apps with relevant keywords. After an extensive process of inclusion, a total of twenty-two apps were included for further evaluation. The evaluation consisted of (1) whether the app was based on theoretical research, and if so: which theories, (2) measuring the usability with the System Usability Scale and (3) determining the level of persuasive technology using the Persuasive System Design model. Results: The evaluation revealed that apps generally make good use of positive psychology theories. Especially the broaden-and-build theory often emerged. The apps make use of persuasive technology, but this can still be greatly improved. The usability of the apps is good. Conclusion: There is a wide range of promising positive psychology apps available in the App Store. Further research is needed, focusing on the content of the apps, to draw definitive conclusions about the quality of the apps.
