Abstract: | The 2014 European elections introduced a new procedure of lead candidates for the post of the European Commission President. Newspapers have highlighted that the awareness of these so called EU-Spitzenkandidaten was low among European citizens. This thesis thus examines citizens’ knowledge about the EU-Spitzenkandidaten for the 2014 European elections. A particular focus lies on the citizen’s media usage. Therefore, the research question is to what extent the usage of established and new media sources influenced a voter’s political knowledge about the 2014 EU-Spitzenkandidaten. The analysis shows that first and foremost reading newspapers influenced the voters’ political knowledge about the candidates. The Internet on the other hand plays a weaker, less influential role, which is contrary to the expectations raised in the beginning. |
