Abstract:In our environment there are more and more surveillance cameras and other security measures. This can be influencing on the people who are aware of them. Some studies show that people behave differently or change their perception when cameras are present. This paper examines whether the presence of camera, has a paradox effect on the perception of the environment. Paradox in the sense, that people perceive their environment negatively if a camera is present. Furthermore, it is tested whether there is a relationship with paranoid thinking. It is assumed that people with a high level of paranoid thinking rather associate surveillance cameras with negative things comparatively to people with a low level of paranoid thinking. The study was conducted using an online survey. Participants were shown some photos from a neutral street to see. This part consisted of three conditions. In the first condition no camera could be seen in the photos, in the second condition a camera could be seen in the photos and in the third condition a camera and a sign, which indicates the camera, could be seen. Thereafter, the participants had to answer some questions about their impression of the street. At the end of the questionnaire their degree of paranoid thinking was measured. The results show that participants, who have seen the camera, did not describe the street more negatively than the participants, who did not see any camera. However, there was an effect in the paranoid thinking. Participants with a high level of paranoid thinking judged the street more negatively than participants with a low level of paranoid thinking. One limitation of the study was that there were an insufficient number of participants to generalize the results.
