Abstract:In this research is investigated whether there is a connection between religious salience, the influence religion has in everyday life, and anxiety. Religious salience is a relatively new construct and therefore not a lot of research has been done with it. There are indicators that it can regulate the usage of religion as a stress-buffer. The fact that anxiety disorders are so common and the treatment is still not perfect, makes research like this very relevant. Method In this research two questionnaires where used to collect the data. A questionnaire about religion is constructed for this research by using items from existing questionnaires that measures 5 dimensions of religion: religious beliefs, religious experience, religious behaviour, consequences of religion and religious salience. For measuring anxiety, the Brief Symptom Inverntory is used. Both questionnaires were given to two groups, a control and a clinical group. The control group consists of participants from the ‘ordinary’ population and the clinical group has participants who are in treatment for an anxiety disorder at a clinical institution. Results The results show a weak positive correlation between religious salience and anxiety that is significant. Furthermore, the explorative factoranalysis does not show the expected 5 dimensions. Following the output of this analysis the old salience was adjusted and the same analysis where done with no significant outcomes as a result. Conclusion There is a weak relation found between religious salience and anxiety which shows that people with a higher salience score, have more anxiety. But all the other results show no relation between the two variables There is a good theoretical foundation for the relation between the variables, therefor when the research is done with only one specific religion at a time or one disorder at a time, there might be new insights. Also more research to the construct of religious salience in general is recommended. The results of this research raise questions about the completeness of the original items used to measure religious salience.
