Abstract: | Composite materials are frequently used in airplanes and aviation applications like helicopters. Damages in composite materials are in most cases complex and hard to detect. To obtain the real condition of the blades structural health monitoring technology can be applied. In this way, the composite materials can be used more safely and effectively. The research question is stated as: To what extend can damage in a composite beam structure, subjected to rotor blade system boundary conditions, be detected with modal-based techniques while only using output data? It is concluded that output only modal-based techniques are successfully implemented on a composite blade experimental setup. The behavior of the setup is a step towards an actual rotor blade system. It can be concluded that a robust SHM system can be developed while the damages are concentrated on one location. It turns out to be very difficult to draw any conclusions on the health of the blade when multiple damages are present. |
