Abstract: | Introduction: This qualitative study tried to examine the role of future technology. The research question that has been formulated is: ‘‘In what way do people portray future technology in everyday life?’’. Method To investigate this research question existing data, ‘letters from the future’, that has been collected during an earlier online investigation, will be used. These letters are written by people of different ages and with different backgrounds, although the female students are in the majority. They were asked to describe their desired future in details. A part of them wrote spontaneously about future technological developments , without that being requested directly. These technology letters were selected for further analysis, with the focus on how people wrote about technology. For example, is technology being portrayed positively or negatively, and what part does technology play in the future? Results The analysis shows only little spontaneously has been talked about technology, and even less about actual future and new technology. The mentioned technology in the letters is also largely noted as a subsidiary area. Also, implicit technology plays a big part as the mentioned technology. Discussion The raising question is, why do people not include (future) technology in the imagination of their own future? One explanation could be that people take technology for granted in their everyday life, and no longer dwell on the utility and the role of technology (in the future). |
