Abstract: | Current literature provides an extensive body of knowledge regarding the effective composition of risk messages from a content-wise perspective, with the ultimate aim of enhancing self-sufficiency in the domain of safety. However, research about the role of a message’s design, and hence its processing by the receiver, is limited. Therefore, the present research explored the effect of active risk message processing by the receiver on his or her self-sufficiency, as well as on the predictors risk perception, efficacy beliefs (response efficacy & self-efficacy) and social norm. An experimental study shows that children express more response efficacy, a more positive social norm and ultimately more intention to act self-sufficiently if they process a risk message actively instead of non-actively. These results seem to be mainly significant for a relatively unknown risk, while for a relatively familiar risk key differences are found between processing (experimental groups) and non-processing (control group) of a risk message. No significant difference was found between the active and non-active processing of a risk message with regard to actual self-sufficient behaviour, risk perception and self-efficacy. Limitations of the present research as well as theoretical and practical implications are discussed. |
