Abstract:Background: This study examines the content validity of the Welzijnsmeter, a questionnaire designed to measure the quality of life of elderly people diagnosed with dementia. Recent movements in psychology and health care, such as positive psychology, have led to the development of the Welzijnsmeter. The Welzijnsmeter is based on items of a variety of questionnaires that where brought together in a single instrument. Previous studies showed that it is psychometrically valid and reliable (Klein, 2015; Mueller, 2015). However, it is unknown whether this instrument actually measures concepts of quality of life and well being. Therefore this study examined the content validity of the Welzijnsmeter. Methods: The validity of the content is examined by means of a literature review. The book ‘handboek Ouderenpsychologie’ deals with four accepted models concerning the quality of life. The most suited model is selected for the basis of this research. Furthermore the validity of the content is examined by using the most applicable model of three models focused on positive psychology. The main reason of using this model is that the Welzijnsmeter is based on this point of view. Results: The Welzijnsmeter is substantiated by the adaptation-coping model (Droes, 1991) and by de Lange (2004). All items of the Welzijnsmeter adress an adaptive tasks or component of the adaptation-coping model and thus are applicable. On the other hand not all the adaptive tasks from the model are used within the Welzijnsmeter. The theory in which the three components of well-being, are described from positive psychology is the most applicable for the Welzijnsmeter. With regard to positive psychology, not all the results substantiate the Welzijnsmeter because the description of the concepts were too abstract and the impact of dementia is barely taken into account. However, some principles of the positive psychology were included in formulating the items. Conclusion and discussion: The Welzijnsmeter seems to be a valid instrument as examines not only the adaption- coping model. However not all important adaptive tasks are covered within this instrument. During this review it was difficult applying the theoretical substantiation from the positive psychology of the Welzijnsmeter.
