Abstract: | An evaluation of the extent that the combination of BRCA mutation testing and an online support group, can be considered empowering. First by elaborating on the reasons for ascribing empowerment to BRCA testing. Secondly, by providing two alternative perspectives on the role of BRCA status knowledge in decision making for proceeding measures: identification of the at-risk status or identification as unhealthy. Lastly, the occurrence of empowerment and these alternative perspectives is assessed in an online support forum related to the BRCA mutation. This is based on both a conversation and a content analysis on a selection of threads. |
