Abstract:This research looks into the extent in which the Twente Police’s performance in the case of burglaries confirms to victims’ expectations, how this performance is judged, and what factors determine this judgment. Whether the judgment of contacts with the police influences the general image of the police held by victims and their attitude to supporting the police is also investigated. Following research by Tyler (1999), it is expected that factors relating to procedural justice determine victims’ satisfaction with police performance, which in turn and related to expectations about the police influences their general image of and attitude to the police. In-depth interviews were conducted on ten recent victims of (attempted) burglary from the municipality of Hengelo. Qualitative analysis shows that victims’ expectations are mostly met and they are generally satisfied with police performance. Most victims became more positive about the police and all are willing to support her. Further analysis suggests that a favorable outcome of the police investigation is not a prerequisite for satisfaction; victims’ impression of the effort shown by the police partly determines satisfaction with police performance, in relation to intensity of expectations; and compliance to expectations influences general judgments. A link with attitude wasn’t supported.
