Abstract: | Chronic pain is a major public health issue and decreases a person’s quality of life in physical, psychological and social life areas. A lot of research was done to improve the efficacy of chronic pain treatment but further research is needed to identify possible influences on the efficacy. The aim of this study is to explore if the efficacy of multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain patients is influenced by the patients’ expectations with a patient’s opinion about treatment credibility and the personal treatment history as mediators. 72 Chronic pain patients participated in the study which all followed the multidisciplinary treatment program of the Revalidatiecentrum Roessingh. The patients had to complete at two measure moments which was used for the data analysis. The results showed that a patients’ expectation has no direct effect on the treatment efficacy. However credibility and treatment history together are significantly mediating the effect of expectation on the treatment outcome. Furthermore credibility alone is also significantly mediating this effect. Evidence was found that treatment outcome is indeed influenced by a person’s expectation when a patient’s opinion about treatment credibility and the personal treatment history are functioning as mediators. |
