Abstract: | From December 2014 until April 2015 I have been doing an internship at CSIRO Energy, Newcastle, NSW, Australia as part of the master ME at the University of Twente. This internship was with the Solar Thermal group and specifically the part of the group working on the design of solar tower fields. During my stay I have worked on three projects: - Design of a communication box controlling up to 192 heliostats: I was responsible for the design of the box in Solidworks as well as creating fabrication drawings, specifying components and helping with assembly of the box and other components of the field. At the end of the project a box was dispatched and will be installed in the field soon. - Design of a FE model of a heliostat: The current design is based on basic calculations and they would like to know where in the design some material could be removed savely, reducing the cost. I have scripted a parametric model of the heliostat, using Python as programming language and Strand7 as FE software. Due to the parametric nature of the model, all lengths and sizes can be altered as well as the number of elements for all parts. The results looked very promising when compared to in field measurements. - Thermal stress FE model of a receiver pipe. Another part of the research group was designing a new receiver for supercritical CO2. I have created a FE model in Strand7 using the thermal profile from a CFD analysis and temperature dependent material properties. The results were compared to results by analytical means, done by a colleague. The results differed quite a lot, which questions the validity of the analytical formula's for this particular case. Due to time constraints it could not be investigated further. |
