Abstract:Quasi zero stiffness is a method in which a zero stiffness is obtained in a dynamical system by having a positive and a negative stiffness. One method to obtain quasi zero stiffness is through magnetic levitation, in which one magnetpair provides a positive stiffness and one magnetpair provides a negative stiffness. However, the system is very unstable when in quasi zero stiffness state. Moreover, the stiffnesses are very nonlinear with respect to the displacements of the levitated mass. In this research, more insight is gained in the dynamical behavior of the system by deriving the equations of motions and subsequently performing simulations in MATLAB. Both time dependent and frequency dependent characteristics where examined. From these examinations, natural frequencies, characteristic responses and a relation between the equilibrium positions and stability were obtained. Eventually, the usefulness of the principle with regard to vibration isolation is considered. Also, a prototype of the system has been further developed and made ready for measurements in a realistic setting.
