Abstract:Background: In health care, there’s an increase in the use of eHealth, such as video calling. In combination with traditional face to face treatment, eHealth is deployed to reduce the increasing costs in health care and to work even more customer-oriented. A combination of face to face treatment and eHealth is called blended-care. Yet little investigation has been done on the implementation of video calling in health care. In this study, the pre- and post-implementation of video calling in a part of a health institution is studied, with the purpose to determine whether there is support among the employees to implement video calling, and what the prerequisites are for a good implementation. Methods: This qualitative research is done at Careyn, a big social organisation for physical and mental health care. First, a post-implementation study has been done on video calling at the wijkteams of this organisation, where an implementation of video calling was unsuccessful. This study was based on the Technology Acceptance Model. Next, a pre-implementation research has been done on video calling at the thuisbegeleiding of this organisation. These studies are done by interviews with five employees of the wijkteams and seven employees of the thuisbegeleiding. Based on the outcomes, prerequisites are formulated for a good implementation of video calling at the thuisbegeleiding. Results The outcome of the research is that there is sufficient support at the employees of the thuisbegeleiding to implement video calling. Furthermore, the employees of the wijkteams who have worked before with video calling have a markedly positive attitude towards implementation, even if they have had bad experiences before. Mainly because of technical reasons, implementation of video calling at the wijkteams has appeared to be unsuccessful. Additionally, the demand for video calling didn’t come much from the people who have to work with it (bottom-up), but implementation was mainly top-down. Finally, the employees were not enough educated to work with video calling and there was no clear communication between management and the workplace. Recommendations: For a good implementation, it is important that the prerequisites are being complied. These are, besides the important aspects of time and money, also education, implementation based on the demand from the workplace and a clear communication between management, ICT-helpdesk and the staff. Also, for the implementation of video calling, it is recommended to survey what the needs of the individual colleagues are and to respond to it.
