Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate to what extent self-interest theory can explain differences in welfare state attitudes between natives and immigrants in general and between 1st and 2nd generation immigrants. Data on more than 30,000 people from 19 European net immigration countries are taken from the European Social Survey from 2008. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicate that self-interest theory can only partly explain differences in welfare state attitudes between immigrants and natives.
