Abstract:Background: Elderly with dementia in health institutions often experience a decrease in quality of life. They also experience depressive symptoms. Studies have been done to examinate the influence of reminiscence regarding quality of life and depressive symptoms. A new method of reminiscence therapy is the use of reminiscence boxes. These boxes are filled with objects from the olden days. The expectation is that the objects will ‘trigger’ the elderly to reminiscence. Through this intervention overall wellbeing can be improved. Method: This pilot-study has been done on one location of the institution of Livio. The population contained 10 elderly. The experimental group consisted of 5 elderly. The control group consisted of 5 elderly too. The experimental group received the intervention for 4 weeks. After each week there was an observation done by the monitor. The observations used are the Qualidem and the Cornell Scale. On the basis of the observations research have been done to analyze whether a significant difference appeared after 4 weeks. Results: The analysis showed a significant difference on the Qualidem. The experimental group scored with a significance level of .034 after 4 weeks higher on the Qualidem. There has been an improvement of quality of life with the experimental group. The analysis showed a difference on the Cornell Scale. The experimental group scored better on the Cornell Scale. The depressive feelings have been reduced after 4 weeks. Conclusion: The intervention had a positive effect on the quality of life on the members of the experimental group. There has not been an effect on depressive symptoms. Some recommendations have been made for a follow-up study. For example, larger population, different questionnaire to measure quality of life and two monitors to observe.
