Abstract: | In this study the aerodynamic drag and lift coefficients of a conceptual hypersonic aircraft connected to an external service module are assessed in hypersonic flight conditions. First order numerical calculations are carried out with ANSYS Fluent, a commercial CFD package. The optimal angle of attack of the aircraft is obtained in order to ensure static stability during flight. Under this optimal angle of attack, the dynamics of the external surface module are determined upon separation in flight. Collision of the aircraft and external service module has to be avoided at all times. It is found that under the proposed angle of attack, collision does not occur. All calculations are performed with a first order solver, it is recommended to apply a second order solver to obtain a more accurate solution. |
