Abstract: | The focus of this study was on the role of guided instruction on children’s ability to use the science model of experimentation and to abstract new information through inquiry. Guided instruction comprises providing information, examples, modelling, feedback and exercise, together with a research question. Previous research has shown that children who receive direct instruction make more use of the Control of Variables Strategy and obtain more knowledge than children without specific instruction. Direct instruction is almost similar to guided instruction, but merely provides information, examples and feedback. Other research has shown that guided instruction has a more positive effect on both points mentioned above than direct instruction. In this study, an experiment was carried out with 56 elementary schoolchildren who had to investigate a so-called wicked slot machine. Half of the children was given guided instruction (n=27) and the other half (n=29) received minimal instruction, in which only a research question was provided. Children’s investigative behaviour was measured by means of observations and verbal questions; acquired knowledge was measured by means of a test. The results of this study lend partial support to the hypothesis that children who receive guided instruction make more use of the science model of experimentation than children who are given minimal instruction. Furthermore, the results showed that children acquired more knowledge in the guided instruction group than in the group with minimal instruction. |
