Abstract:Background: Elderly with dementia often experience depressive feelings. They also experience a decrease in quality of life. Studies have been done to examinate the influence of reminiscence therapy on the feeling of depression and the quality of life. These studies show interesting results. This research will use reminiscence boxes. These boxes are filled with objects form the past. The objects in those boxes are used as starting point for a conversation about the olden days. The research expectations are: 1.) The intervention with the reminiscence boxes provides a significant improvement of the feeling of depression of elderly with dementia in comparison with the control group. 2.) The intervention with the reminiscence boxes provides a significant improvement of the quality of life of elderly with dementia in comparison with the control group Method: There are 30 participants in this research coming from four different locations of healthcare institution Livio. The participants are random assigned to an experimental and a control group. The participants of the experimental group attended eight meetings with the reminiscence box. After each meeting, the caretaker was asked to fill in two observation scales: the Qualidem and the Cornell Scale for depression in dementia. The control group attended none of the meetings but their caretaker was also asked to fill in the same observation scales. On the basis of these observations there is analyzed if there is an effect of the meetings with the reminiscence boxes on the feeling of depression or the quality of life by the elderly with dementia. The interaction effect of time and condition is also examined. Results: There is a significant effect of time on the feeling of depression or the quality of life in both the experimental and the control group. There is no difference found between the experimental and the control group in this research. Conclusion: The intervention has no influence on the feeling of depression or the quality of life of the participants in this research. The intervention with the reminiscence boxes needs more investigation before implementation on big scale. On the basis of these findings, there are some recommends for further research, for example: training the caretakers in scoring the observation scales, limit the contamination between the experimental and the control group and more different healthcare institutions included. Besides that, it seems interesting to investigate the influence of taking observation on the feeling of depression and the quality of life.
