Abstract:This research therefore aims at identifying institutional and systematic shortcomings in the European cooperation with regards to external border protection. This will be done by scrutinizing the structure and activities of the Frontex agency and by subsequently comparing these with the new proposed European Border and Coast Guard, to see to what extent they are likely to continue or stop under the new European Agency. The overall research question of this paper can therefore be formulated in the following way: “To what extent does the current institutional set-up of the European border protection agency under the AFSJ contribute to the current shortcomings in the protection of the EU’s external borders and what needs to be done in order to improve it.
