Abstract:Aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Subjective Vitality Scale (VS) developed by Ryan and Frederick (1997). The intention was to find out if the questionnaire adequately measures the psycho-physical characteristics of the concept vitality. It was expected that the VS (1) is unidimensional, (2) has a good reliability, (3) shows positive correlations with related measures and (4) negative correlations with opposite measures. In the study the data of 321 respondents of an online survey conducted by the University of Twente was used. To test the one-dimensionality of the VS, a Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis was conducted. The construct validity was determined by correlational analysis. The results showed that the VS has a good reliability and is unidimensional. Furthermore, in six of eleven cases the measured correlations were in accordance with the expectations resulted from previous studies and literature. The results of this study indicate satisfactory psychometric properties of the VS. However, there is still a discussion about the operationalization of the psycho-physical characteristics of vitality. These findings encourage further research to explore the concept of vitality in order to find a common definition and operationalization; and thereby examine further predictors for human health.
